Abstract

Cities and villages in Egypt are growing rapidly in recent years. The rapid increase of population led to the expansion of cities and villages. Most of these expansions are not associated with an increase in population facilities and services. The increased pressure on facilities and services in these cities led to reducing the level of performance. One of the most important of these facilities is educational facilities represented in schools at all levels, which due to rapid growth made the locations of these schools lack the most common standards as suitable population numbers they serve, their distance from natural and human hazards and the suitability of the land topography. Accordingly, the expansion of cities and villages should be monitored and new locations of educational facilities have to be chosen. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a useful tool in analysis and evaluation of the performance of educational facilities. This enables educational authorities matching the facility supply with the relevant demand if the available data represents the real situation. In this study, the remote sensing technology has been used in collecting data by extract features from satellite images. The extracted data will be a source for GIS. The spatial distribution of the current status of educational facilities are also evaluated. The results of this study show that most of the educational facilities that were established in the studied area did not take into account the criteria which set by the authorities. Furthermore, most districts are suffering from a shortage of numbers of schools. The pattern of distribution of those schools dominated by the spatial dispersion. So the work is then extended to develop the optimum method to select new schools locations inside the specified regions according to the Egyptian educational authorities.
