Abstract

(1) Determine the point prevalence of cerebrovascular stroke in the rural community of Minia governorate.
(2) To determine the correlation between cerebrovascular stroke and various risk factors (e.g.: hypertension, diabetes, smoking, alcohol consumption, previous stroke, cardiac disease, and positive family history, etc.).
The current study involved two main parts:
I. Theoretical Part.
II. Practical Part.
I. Theoretical Part:
This part included the review of literature that consisted of the first two chapters as follows:
Chapter (1)
This chapter involves Stroke definition and pathophysiology, covering the topics of history and evolution of stroke definition, pathophysiology of stroke and mechanisms of cell death
Chapter (2):
This chapter discussed Risk factors and epidemiology of stroke covering both modifiable and nonmodifible risk factors of CVS and a review of some community based epidemiological studies in and outside Egypt.
II.Practical part:
The practical part of the current study involved the following:
1- subject and methods:
This was a community based door- to- door descriptive cross sectional study conducted on the inhabitants of El-Borgia village: one of Minia governorate villages. A simple random sample of 10169 persons was screened for CVS.
Screening was done using the modified WHO questionnaire for detecting neurological diseases (appendix1). The cases identified in this phase of the study as having probable stroke were subjected to further evaluation by stroke specific questionnaire (appendix2), risk factors for stroke questionnaire (appendix3) then the identified cases were subjected to blood picture, fasting blood sugar, lipid profile and ECG and cardiological consultation
Inclusion criteria were all those who developed CVS according to WHO definition which defined stroke as ”a syndrome of rapidly developing clinical signs of focal (or global) disturbance of cerebral function, with symptoms lasting 24 h or longer or leading to death, with no apparent cause other than of vascular origin.”.
Transient ischemic attacks and causes of focal cerebral disturbance other than of vascular origin as (head trauma, encephalitis, neoplasm, etc) were exclusion criteria.
There were 15 cases found fulfilling the criteria of inclusion and exclusion.
