Abstract

Post-partum hemorrhage is a great challenge facing obstetricians since centuries, it lead to serious maternal morbidity include cardiovascular complication ,respiratory, renal, coagulation, hepatic, neurological, uterine dysfunction and also maternal mortality, 27.1% of global maternal deaths are due to PPH. Also, 19.7% of maternal mortality in Egypt was due to postpartum hemorrhage.
Understanding of the factors associated with maternal morbidity and mortality related to PPH would help health care providers to rapidly identify women at highest risk for dying and provide appropriate care in preventing PPH and help care providers to strengthen both diagnosis and treatment of PPH among women at high risk.
This study is a prospective a cross-sectional observational survey study which was carried out at 3 hospitals (Minia Maternity & Children University hospital, Minia General hospital and Misr Al-horra hospital), Minia city Egypt, during the period from December 2015 till November 2016. A total of 308 women with age range (16-41) years who attended or referred to the 3 chosen hospitals were recruited in the study,8 cases were excluded due to incomplete data and patient refusal. The aim of this study is to assess the factors associated with maternal morbidity and mortality in patients with postpartum hemorrhage in Minia governorate hospitals.
All cases were subjected to the following:
1. Personal and demographic data (Age, residence, level of education, social standard, .. etc.).
2. Obstetrical data (Parity, pervious mode of delivery, history of PPH, pre labour Hb, birth weight, ANC care, …. etc.).
3. Medical data (Anemia, coagulation defect, diabetes, renal disease, liver disease, hypertensive disorders and cardiac disease).
4. Data related to medical service delivered (Place of delivery, mode of delivery, time of delivery, who attending delivery, experience of doctor assisting delivery, management of third stage, time taken to diagnose postpartum hemorrhage, delivery- transfer interval time, hospital referral, procedures done for PPH, hospital will manage postpartum hemorrhage, availability of blood transfusion, number of blood units and blood products units received, type of morbidity, I.C.U. admission and maternal mortality related to postpartum hemorrhage).
