Abstract

Background: Photoreceptor damage at the fovea could occur in diabetic macular edema (DME) and it is represented by disruption of the external limiting membrane(ELM) or the junction between the inner and outer segment lines (ellipsoid zone) as seen by optical coherence tomography (OCT). These findings are correlated with visual impairment.
Aim of the work: To correlate between best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and photoreceptors changes seen structurally by OCT and functionally by Electroretinography (ERG) in DME.
Design of the study: prospective clinical case study.
Methodology: Fifty eyes of forty three diabetic patients were included, divided into two groups.
Results: Significant differences were observed in BCVA, Central macular thickness (CMT) and all multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) parameters in five-rings regions of the retina between eyes with maculopathy versus controls (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The visual acuity was correlated significantly with morphological changes revealed by OCT and with mfERG. The combination of OCT and mfERG may provide objective criteria for the evaluation and assessment of DME.
