Abstract

In laboratory – scale study has focused on the removal of organophosphorus pesticides (OP) from wastewater and polluted solid surfaces by different methods. Conventional and advanced oxidation processes have been examined for treatment of OP. Chlorpyrifos (Cfs) and Malathion (Mal) have been selected to simulate the organophosphorus pollutants. The results demonstrated that the conventional (chemical oxidants, ozonation and ultraviolet irradiation) are insufficient treatment system for OP (Cfs & Mal) degradation. Ultraviolet irradiation has the ability of converting Cfs and Mal to toxic forms. The combination of chemical oxidants (TCICA) and ozonation process followed by adsorption process are quit efficient and yields a complete removal of OP. Analysis of treated water revealed that it can be reused again in agriculture purposes according to Decision of the Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities No.(44/2000). The present study examined a recently decontamination powder for its ability to destroy Cfs and Mal from solid surfaces. The proposed powder exhibits the desirable characteristics of green oxidation which is an environmentally of no harm reagents, solvents and products under mild reaction conditions. This study includes the design of a decontamination device for removal of pollutants from the contaminated surfaces and the device was tested using the proposed decontaminating powder. The proposed decontaminating powder proved to be safe, easy controlled, high efficient of flexible operation and being relatively cheap.
