Abstract This study aimed to assess the stability of surface treated mini-implants (MIs) during en-masse retraction by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study was conducted on fifteen patients (mean age: 19 years). Thirty MIs were divided into 15 smooth surface MIs while, the other 15 MIs were surface treated by sandblasting, acid etching and anodization technique. Both types of MIs were randomly inserted between the roots of maxillary 2nd bicuspid and 1st molar on both sides of each patient. After two weeks healing period, bilateral extraction of maxillary 1st bicuspids were done. Closed coil spring was used on both sides to deliver 300 g retraction force to en-masse retract the maxillary anterior teeth. Three dimensional registrations (CBCT) were taken at the beginning of loading as prerecords. The post-records were taken after six months of continuous loading. Automatic superimposition was done to measure the mesio-distal, apico-occlusal and bucco-palatal displacement of each MI. There were no statistically significant difference between the mesial displacement of the surface treated and the smooth surface MIs at head and tail. Both types of MIs showed insignificant occlusal and extrusion displacement. We concluded that the surface treatment did not affect the stability of the MIs. |
