Abstract Background: Uncontrolled postoperative pain can affect patients’ functional recovery and comfort, both critical factors for patients who expect to resume their daily activities as soon as possible. Accordingly, current recommendations indicate that multimodal treatment approaches should be used for acute pain occurring postoperatively to achieve better results. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the postoperative analgesic effect of a single dose of dexamethasone administered intraoperatively in patients undergoing surgical fixation of fractured neck of fumer by measuring and comparing the numerical pain rating scale (NPRS) scores and the need for postoperative opioid administration. Methods: The study was conducted on 60 randomly chosen patients in Ain Shams University Hospitals after approval of the medical ethical committee. They were allocated in two groups of 30 patients each: group #1 (30 cases): receiving a single dose of 0.2 mg/kg of Dexamethasone intra-operatively. group #2 (30 cases): receiving a 10 ml normal saline. Results: The results of this study revealed that patients in the group 1 had less NPRS scores, and needed lower doses of postoperative opioids than those in the group 2. Conclusion: The administration of dexamethasone decreases postoperative pain scores, reduces opioid consumption. |
