Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the putative role of major salivary glands on liver regeneration together with their histological features following partial hepatectomy and to examine the difference between absence and presence of each major salivary gland after PH. Also, it was directed to recognize the synergistic and/or antagonistic action among major salivary glands, after PH. Materials and Methods: Ninety adult male albino rats were used, which comprised a control group (ten rats) and four equal experimental groups that were equally and randomly subdivided into two subgroups A, B. 1. Group-I (Control Group): comprised ten normal rats. 2. Group-II (whole glands-Group): Subgroup-IIA (ablation-subgroup), in which rats were subjected to complete ablation of their major salivary glands. Then, after a recovery period of two weeks, they were subjected to PH. Subgroup-IIB (All glands-subgroup), in which animals had all their major salivary glands intact, though they were subjected to PH. 3. Group-III (PG-Group): Subgroup-IIIA (SMG-SLG-subgroup), in which rats were subjected to bilateral ablation of their PG. Then, after a recovery period of two weeks, animals were subjected to PH. Subgroup-IIIB (PG-subgroup), in which rats underwent bilateral ablation of their SMGs and SLGs. Then, after two weeks recovery, its rats were subjected to PH. 4. Group-IV (SMG-Group): Subgroup-IVA (PG-SLG-subgroup), in which rats were subjected to bilateral ablation of their SMGs. Then, after a recovery period of two weeks, its animals were subjected to PH. Subgroup-IVB (SMG- subgroup), in which animals were subjected to bilateral ablation of their PG and SLG. Then, after a recovery period of two weeks, rats were subjected to PH. 5. Group-V (SLG-Group): Subgroup-VA (PG-SMG-subgroup), in which rats underwent bilateral ablation of their SLGs. Then, after a recovery period of two weeks, animals were subjected to PH. Subgroup-VB (SLG-subgroup), in which rats were subjected to bilateral ablation of their PG and SMG. Then, after a recovery period of two weeks, rats were subjected to PH. After one week of PH, half of the animals were euthanized, whereas the other half was sacrificed after two weeks. Before euthanization, blood samples were taken for ALT analysis to evaluate liver function. Samples from salivary gland and liver were prepared for LM, EM and IM for PCNA.
