Abstract Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can be identified as increased fat accumulation in liver without excessive drinking of alcohol.Aim of the study: biochemical, histopathological and immunohistochemical parameters were assayed to examine the possible protective effects of metformin and garlic on experimentally induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in adult albino rats Materials and methods: Forty eight adult male Sprague-Dawley rats with average weight ranging between ”200-250” grams were used. They were divided into four main groups; each of which was subdivided into two subgroups (n=6).Results: assessment of fat accumulation, collagen deposition and inflammatory cell infiltration in the liver was performed via image analysis of oil red O, Sirius red and anti TNF α stained sections respectively. The results revealed that there was a significant increase in all histopathological parameters in (HFD) groups when compared to their corresponding (NC) groups while there was a significant improvement in these parameters when comparing prevention and treated groups with their corresponding (HFD) groups. There was no significant difference between garlic and metformin on histopathological and immunohistochemical levels Conclusion: the insulin sensitizing effect of metformin and the antioxidant effect and hypolipidemic role of garlic are beneficial for prevention of NAFLD development and progression |
