Abstract The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of GSEPs in Ehrlich cancer in mice, through estimating some physiological and immunological parameters. Female Balb/c mice weighing 25±2 were used, they were divided into four groups after one week acclimation: Control group, tumor bearing group (mice was s.c. inoculated with 0.2 ml of tumor cell line (4x106 cells/mouse) in the right thigh region and left for a week; Proanthocyanidin treated group (mice was treated with 100mg/ 100g of proanthocyanidin daily for 3 weeks) and GSPE pre-treated group (mice was treated with 100mg/ 100g of proanthocyanidin daily for 3 weeks, then was s.c. inoculated with 0.2 ml of tumor cell line (4x106 cells/ mouse) in the right thigh region and left for a week). The volume of solid tumor in the thigh region was measured, antioxidant markers: (PC, SOD and GSPx) were determined, and cholesterol, TG and HDLc, level were estimated and LDLc was calculated photometically. As well as the determination of serum immunoglobulins content: IgA, IgM and IgG by ELISA, production of IL-4 and INF-γ was estimated by ELISA and the percentage of IFN-γ/IL-4 was calculated. In conclusion, the obtained results imply that, GSPEs have promising antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activities against Ehrlich tumor cell line in mice. The enhancement of the host resistance in EAC model may be through maintain intracellular redox balance by enzymatic and non enzymatic antioxidant defense systems, improve metabolic functions and activation of activities of specific cytokines as: IFN-γ and IL-4 and immune response. Recommendations: Using GSPEs as a nutritional source and a prophylactic agents for their medicinal beneficial effects such as anti-tumor activities, immunomodulatory effects, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. |
