Abstract

The present study was performed to estimate serum levels of Trx-1, MMP-9, MDA, GSH, SOD, CEA and CA 15-3 in breast cancer patients, as well as their correlation with clinicopathological parameters, and the evaluation if they could be used as markers for breast cancer metastasis. All cases involved in this study were clinically, radiologically and pathologically examined in the Oncology Center, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University; Mansoura, Egypt. The laboratory and pathological investigations that carried out in the Oncology Center are tissue human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2), estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone (PR) analysis, blood picture: hemoglobin concentration (Hb), red blood corpuscles (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs) and platelet count and serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3).Serum was used for colorimetric estimation of MDA and GSH concentrations and SOD activity. Serum Trx-1 and MMP-9 levels were determined by enzyme linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) technique.from this study, we conclude that. Serum Trx-1level and MMP-9 level are significantly elevated in patients with breast cancer metastasis. Trx-1 and MMP-9 elevation are correlated with vascular invasion and metastatic spread of the tumor. Trx-1 and MMP-9 are possible candidates as guide for relapse of breast cancer with distant metastases, as they linked with advanced stage of the disease. Trx-1 and MMP-9 are potential therapeutic targets for prevention of progression and metastasis of breast cancer. MDA as Oxidative stress biomarker is implicated in the development of metastasis in breast cancer patients.
