Abstract

The present study deals with lithostratigraphy, microfacies analysis and depositional environments, cementation and diagenesis and mineralogical significances of the Late Oligocene and Early-Middle Miocene limestone rocks constitute the different rock units; Al Khowaymat, Al Faidiyah and Al Jaghbub formations in Al Bardia area, northeast Libya. The formations are studied in details at Wadi Shamas and Wadi Rizk. The two Wadis are 8 Km apart and are located at distance about 150 km from Tobruk city. Detailed field studies include; collecting samples and macrofossils, measuring thickness and describing the lithology of the different formations. Laboratory analyses including thin sections investigation, scanning electron microscopy study for some carbonate rock slabs and X-ray diffraction analysis for carbonate rock powdered materials. The outcomes of these analyses enabled to understand the paleoenvironmental trends and depositional history of the stratigraphic succession in the Al Bardia area.
