Abstract

Summary and Conclusion
Infertility may place significant stress on a man’s social and marital relationships.
This is a case control study which was carried out at department of Dermatology, Venereology and Andrology, Assiut university hospitals. Two hundred married men were recruited from outpatient clinic of Andrology, between March and December 2016, 100 infertile men served as case group and 100 fertile men with at least one living child who served as control group.
This work aimed to evaluate the effect of infertility on quality of life in infertile men in Upper Egypt and to determine what variables predict their QOL using the 36-item Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36).
The patients were subjected to full history, thorough general and genital examination, then their QOL was assessed by SF-36 questionnaire and compared with that of fertile men.
The current study showed that the infertile patients who participated in the present study had lower scores in five domains out of the eight domains concerning the quality of life (role imitations due to emotional health, energy/fatigue, emotional wellbeing, social functioning, and general health perception) indicating lower QOL regarding these domains when compared to fertile men.
Our study revealed that QOL scores were negatively affected by increasing patient’s age, prolonged duration of infertility and lower educational status while type of infertility had not been considered as a significant predictor of poor or good QOL.
As regards age of the patient, older age was found to be a significant predictor of poor physical health-related quality of life but not for social or emotional health related quality of life.
In relation to duration of infertility, prolonged duration of infertility was associated with lower scores of physical functioning, energy/fatigue(vitality), pain and general health domains.
Concerning education, illiterate patients had lower scores in physical functioning, role physical, and pain domains when compared to those who had higher level of education indicating lower level of HRQOL regarding those mentioned domains.
from the previous findings it could be concluded that:
1- Quality of life of infertile men was lower than that of fertile men.
2- Quality of life in infertile men was reduced by variables such as longer duration of infertility, advanced age and lower education level.
3- Type of infertility either primary or secondary was not a significant predictor of poor or good QOL.
