Abstract

Train safety and operational efficiency are enhanced by the ability to understand the behavior of trains under varying conditions. The aim of the research is to describe a method to develop empirical formula to calculate four railway dynamic concepts: Rolling and air resistance, Curve resistance, Coefficient of friction between wheel and rail, and coefficient of friction between wheel and braking shoes using operational data.
To realize this goal, field survey and data were collected for track profile, rolling stock characteristics, train composition and the download of Automatic Train Control disc for some trips for different lines at passenger train types during the different seasons by analyzing this data, family of equations can be deduced and useful applications and recommendations can be proposed.

This research consists of six chapters
Chapter (1): Introduction
It consists of the thesis hypotheses, thesis scope, thesis objectives and thesis methodology.
Chapter (2): Literature review
It is considered as a literature review for national and international studies, projects and textbooks.
Chapter (3): Definition and first principles
It deal with the following basic definitions:
- Longitudinal train dynamics (LTD)
- Forces (Tractive Effort (FP), Adhesion force (Fµ))
- Resistances (Rolling and air resistance Rr+a, Grade resistance Rg and Curve
resistance (Rc)
- Braking system
- Automatic Train Control (ATC)

Chapter (4): Methodology (Implementation details)
The proposed methodology to realize the study objectives:
1- Collecting data
- Field survey
- Data from Automatic Train Control (ATC)
2- Preparing the ATC data
3- Proposing a program to obtain the followings
- Classifying the output of (ATC) data into four groups
- Appling the equations of longitudinal train dynamic (LTD)
- Analyzing the obtained result
- Developing empirical equations for estimate Rr+a, Rc, µ and ef
Chapter (5): Results
This chapter apply the proposed methodology to conclude the four empirical formula: rolling and air resistance (Rr+a,), curve resistance (Rc), adhesion friction between wheel and rail (µ) and coefficient of friction between wheel and shoes (ef).

Chapter (6): Conclusions and Recommendations
This chapter discusses the important conclusions and interesting recommendations.
