”The Urban Development of the Libyan City of Alkhoms and its Planning Dimensions.” The Study is divided into five chapters preceded by an introduction and succeeded by a conclusion. The thesis includes an assortment of results and recommendations and it ends with a list of references the student used in her study of Alkhoms City.
The first chapter has the title of: The urban development of Alkhoms City، that chapter discusses the geographic location، the relationships created by that location، the morphological aspects of Alkhoms and the urbanization plan that was studied through the review of the city evolution and the development of Alkhoms area. The chapter also reviews the urban development on the level of the development of the urban locations in the city and the urban development direction as to the city main geographic hubs.
The second chapter has the title of: Alkhoms City Location and Its Geographic Potential. That chapter deals with the city location as to its sea façade and the resulting factual data and the city contour plan and its effect on the city urban structures. The thesis also discusses the city geological structures and formations. It also studies climate factors and their effect on the city constructional constituents. The climate elements deal with factors such as the temperature, wind, relative humidity and rain. The second chapter also discusses the city sources of water of all types such as underground water. surface water and desalinated water. The chapter is concluded with a study of the soil and it is appended with a précis.
The title of the third chapter is: Alkhoms City Inhabitants، and that chapter deals with the change in the volume of the city population and its development rates، with a study of the resident’s growth. and the city population number development and the natural increase in the city residents، births and deaths, that chapter also studies the inhabitants’ distribution along the city and the places where Alkhoms population is concentrated and denser. The third chapter deals with immigration to and from the city. with a study of the characteristics of Alkhoms city inhabitants and the residents’ traits (The educational and marital status), and the economic setup including the family providers and provided for in the city.
The fourth chapter is titled: Alkhoms City Morphology and land use therein، it tackles the construction plan that includes Alkhoms city main land use، the effective factors influencing the use of land and the main characteristics of the use of land in Alkhoms city; all of the above is in addition to a detailed study of the buildings in the city configuration as to the structural characteristics of the residential buildings. The chapter ends with a study of the distribution image of the land use in different areas of the city.
The final Chapter (the fifth) is titled: Future Urban Planning of Alkhoms City: the features of the city urban tissue. The fifth chapter divides the city into three areas for the detailed study of the urban tissue (The northern، middle and eastern areas). The chapter also tackles the main problems concerning housing (problems in the house – deterioration of the residential buildings condition). and it tackles also the problems relevant to urban development. The problems of transportation roads and noise resulting from traffic on those roads (problems of roads and traffic in the city – Noise intensity and its comparison with international rates) have also been discussed in that chapter. The fifth chapter also deals with the study of problems of utilities and services provided for the city inhabitants. The fifth chapter ends with a study and planning of Alkhoms city suggested land use until the year 2027.
The study ended with a conclusion that delineated the most important results of this research and provided some important recommendations for that area of study. and the student. writer of this thesis، uses in her study of Alkhoms city clear methodology in addition to her use of geographic information systems technology in displaying information in cartographic diverse methods.
