المستخلص

This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of quantitative problem solving strategy in remediating difficulties faced by secondary school students when solving chemical calculations problems. To achieve this aim, the current research attempted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the difficulties faced by first year secondary school students when solving chemical calculations problem? (2) What is the effectiveness of quantitative problem solving strategy in remediating difficulties faced by first year secondary school students when solving chemical calculations problems? This research adopted the analytic descriptive design and the experimental design. The participants of this study consisted of sixty first year secondary school students at Al-Gharaqa and Ikhtab secondary mixed schools. The researcher prepared three instruments; (1) a diagnostic test to identify difficulties faced by the students when solving chemical calculations problems. This helped in finding out the difficulties in each topic in the unit, (2) a questionnaire to identify difficulties faced when solving chemical calculations problems from the teachers and supervisors’ point of view, and (3) an achievement test in chemical calculation. The test was applied during the academic year 2017/2018 on first year secondary students. The results of the study indicated the Effectiveness of Quantitative problem solving strategy in remediating difficulties (for the research group) when solving chemical calculations problems. In the light of the results, the researcher presented some recommendations that will help in remediating difficulties when solving chemical calculations problems through using the quantitative problem solving strategy.
