Abstract

The rising rate of workplace violence in health care facilities has become a major problem for health care providers including nurses.Violence can affect individual health the most common negative health outcomes are headaches, stress, anxiety, sleep disturbance, excessive worry, impaired social skills, psychosomatic complaints, and posttraumatic stress disorder.So, the aim of the current study was to assess workplace violence and nurses’ general health in Zagazig City. Design: A descriptive design was used to carry out the present study. Setting: the existing study took place in Zagazig University hospitals and ministry of health hospitals (Al-ahrar) in Zagazig city. Sample size was 414 nurses.Tools: a self-administrated questionnaire sheet was used; it composed of four parts namelypersonal characteristics,workplace violence in the health sector, risk factors for workplace violence and general health questionnaire. Results:the current study results revealed that, 91.3% of nurses were exposed to workplace violence, where the highly reported type was psychological followed by verbal and the least one was physical violence (87.40%, 78.4% & 53.6%) respectively. Considering risk factors,the commonly reported risk factor triggering workplace violence was patients and their families (98.1%). As to nurses’ general health role limitation,the highly reported role limitation was in physical and emotional health (75.8% &72.8 %) respectively. Conclusion:workplace violence is prevalent among nurses in Zagazig city. Moreover, nurses’ general health was affected by all types of violence especially psychological and lateral violence. Recommendation: clear reporting procedures about exposure to violence must be established by hospitals, and encourage nurses to report violence, develop protective guidelines to support healthcare staff in managing workplace violence and improve the security systems and train security staff about effective dealing with violent acts.
