Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common articular disease which leading cause of chronic disability which the economic costs of OA are high. Aim: This study was conducted to focus on intervention of laser effect on chondrocytes apoptosis mechanism in addition to traditional physical therapy exercises. The endpoint results were interleukin 1-beta concentration, pain intensity level during rest and Painless active range of motion of knee joint. Materials and methods: Forty five patients from both sexes with primary osteoarthritis were randomly assigned. Their age ranged from 40 to 55 years old. The patients were divided into two groups. group I: Fifteen patients received traditional physical therapy exercises only while group II: Thirty patients received traditional physical therapy exercises and laser therapy. Both groups received treatment three times per week for two weeks. Interleukin 1-beta concentrations level in blood serum, pain intensity level and painless active range of motion were measured before treatment and after last session of the program. Results: The results revealed that there is significant difference in post treatment results in group II than group I in decreasing of interleukin1 – beta, decreasing of pain and increasing of painless active range of motion for knee osteoarthritis. Conclusion: low level laser therapy is considered a high safe method with no pain or side effects for improvement and treatment for patients. The combination effect of Laser with therapeutic exercises increases painless active range of motion and decrease pain severity level when compared to traditional exercise alone.
