Abstract Glutamine has a role in regulation of insulin release from pancreatic β-cells. Male rats were allocated in groups, (i) vehicle group, (ii) Streptozotocin-diabetic rats, (iii) Streptozotocin-diabetic + liraglutide (150 μg/kg), (iv) Streptozotocin-diabetic rats + glutamine and (v) Streptozotocin-diabetic rats + liraglutide and glutamine. Results indicated that treatment with liraglutide and/or glutamine enhanced insulin production and hence glycemic control in diabetic rats with favorable effects on apoptosis markers. Treatment with glutamine and its combination with liraglutide significantly increased pancreatic expression of sodium-dependent neutral aminoacid transporters-2 by approximately 30-35 fold. Addition of glutamine to liraglutide regimen enhances the glycemic control. |
