Abstract

LBP is pain, muscle tension, or stiffness localized below the costal margin and above the inferior gluteal folds, with or without sciatica, and is defined as chronic when it persists for 12 weeks or more Potential determinants of low back pain can be classified into three categories: individual characteristics (such as age), physical determinants (as lifting of heavy loads) and psycho-social determinants (as stressed work environment). The study was a Descriptive cross sectional study with analytical component, conducted in Mansoura university main hospital, Dakahlia Governorate. The sample size 260 was calculated according to the prevalence of the current problem; 60 junior doctors, 60 nurses, 60 administrative staff, 40 technicians and 40 unqualified staff personnel were selected randomly according to the total numbers of different categories of staff members. Data were coolected, coded, computed then analysed and the followind results came up: The overall prevalence of LBP in the studied group was 53.5%, with the highest prevalence among nursing staff and the lowest prevalence among workers. About 63 % of individuals older than 30 years old suffered from LBP. LBP was significantly higher in married females. The risk of LBP among obese individual was 2.29 times more than normal weight. It was significantly higher in physically inactive individual sand among people suffering from hypertension, migraine and osteoarthritis. Prevalence was significantly higher among those who have been employed for more than 6 years, taking more than 30 minutes to reach work in a car or bus and higher in work activities that include often using computer and often handling patients. As regard Quality of life; workers suffering from LBP had lower Qol score compared to group not suffering from LBP; physical domains and pain score are better among younger age and the unmarried. Also score of Qol domains were significantly lower in females and the low educated group. Frequent computer users, workers frequently handling patients, push or pull heavy things and those sitting/standing for prolonged time showed lower QOL score Roland Morris disability score and BMI were positively correlated. But, it was negatively correlated with all 8 domains of quality of life. Regarding low back characteristics, Roland Morris disability score was significantly higher in cases that experienced LBP more than once per month, suffered from tingling, had taken sick leaves and took medications for LBP.
