Abstract

Pre-eclampsia is very important health problem because it is the main contributor to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Pre-eclampsia (PE) is unique in pregnancy and are characterized by edema, proteinuria and hypertension. Pre-eclampsia is a disease of undetermined cause. Epidemiological and biological evidence suggest that acute or chronic specific nutritional deficiencies can contribute to severe maternal morbidity such as pre-eclampsia. Recent studies have emphasized the possible role of general nutritional deficiency or imbalance of several specific nutrients in the etiology of the disease. Deficiency of a variety of nutrients has been reported in patients with preeclampsia. The obtained results are contradictory and further studies is necessary. The aim of the study is to: Identify the relationship between the nutritional status an occurrence of preeclampsia among pregnant women Material and method This study was followed a cross sectional research design. It was conducted at inpatient unit and antenatal clinic as well as ICU in obstetric department of: National institute of Damanhur Tanta University Hospital affiliated to the University of Tanta. Subjects: Convenience sample of 120 pregnant women were selected from the previously mentioned settings was included in the study. All subjects were selected according to the following specified inclusion criteria:- 1) Pregnant women during their second and third trimester of pregnancy(20-40 weeks of gestation) 2)Age of 20-35 years 3)Free from medical diseases such as essential hypertension ,renal disease ,heart disease. Subjects was consisted of two groups: roup1: included 60 pregnant women with pre-eclampsia. Group2: involved 60 pregnant women free from pre-eclampsia Tools of the study: Two tools were used for data collection: Tool I: A structured interview schedule was developed by the researcher to collect basic data about the study subjects. It entailed three parts: - Part I: Sociodemographic data, Reproductive history and Medical history. Part II: physical examination, Part III: knowledge about nutritional needs during pregnancy and pre-eclampsia. Tool II: Nutritional status assessment sheet: This sheet was developed by the researcher based on the review of current literature to collect the basic data about the study subjects. It intailed three parts:- Part I: anthropometric measurements:- It included mid upper arm circumference, skin fold thickness, mid arm muscle circumference, weight, height and body mass index. Part II: history of food intake: It included 24 hour dietary recall method and feeding habits. Part III: Laboratory investigations: It included hemoglobin level and serum albumin. Tools were developed by the researcher after extensive review of recent and relevant literature. Content validity of the tools was tested by a jury of 10 experts in the obstetric field. A pilot study A pilot study was carried out on 12 pregnant women (excluded from the study subjects) to test the feasibility of the tools as well as to ascertain their clarity and applicability. In addition, the time needed to complete the tools was also estimated. Based on the results of pilot study tools were revised, reconstructed and made ready for use.
