Abstract

Ductus arteriosus is a vascular structure connecting left main pulmonary artery to the upper part of descending aorta. Prematurity increases the risk for PDA. Once, significant PDA is present, it must be closed to avoid its complications.Pharmacotherapy seems to be the treatment of choice for safe & effective closure of significant PDA in preterm infants e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen and indomethacin. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of oral paracetamol in comparison to oral ibuprofen for closure of PDA in premature infants as well as to compare the complications and side effects of both medications. The current studyis a prospective randomized control study carried on 40 preterm infants with GA less than 32wks and significant PDA at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU)of Tanta University hospitals.Patients included in our study have certain inclusion criteria as preterms with GA less than 32wks, having hemodynamic significant PDA by echo(PDA diameter >1.5mm, left atrium/AO ratio >1.5 and end diastolic reversal of blood flow in the aorta).Exclusion criteria includedmajor congenital anomalies, life threatening infections, NEC, serum creatinine >1.6mg, intraventricular hemorrhage, major congenital heart diseases and liver failure. The preterm infants were randomly classified into two groups: group І:(20 preterm infant)received oral paracetamol at dose of (15mg/kg every 6 hours for 3 days).
