Abstract Metabolic syndrome was first described by Gerald Reaven (1988) then modified by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European group for Study of Insulin Resistance (EGIR) in 1999, the National Cholesterol Education Programs Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) in 2001, the American Heart Association/ the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) respectively during 2005 and lastly harmonized in 2009. This study was conducted to measure the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Nawasa Al-Ghayt (an Egyptian village in Dakahlia governorate) and to find a possible associated risk factors during the year 2015 – 2016. This is a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study which included 407 resident adults in Nawasa Al-Ghayt village during the year 2015 – 2016. To the best of our knowledge this is the first study to be done in an Egyptian village (rural area). Metabolic synsrome was diagnosed by the harmonized criteria of metabolic syndrome.The study group were subjected to the following: Questionnaires to collect the data about: socioeconomic status, personal data. Behaviors (Smoking history, sleeping pattern, physical activity and dietary habits), medical history, clinical examination with stress on (arterial blood pressure general and local abdominal, chest and cardiac examination) and laboratory analysis (fasting serum glucose level, fasting serum triglycerides level, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level and serum total cholesterol). |
