Abstract

Background: Epilepsy is a common but serious neurological disease affecting an estimated 50 million people worldwide, with active epilepsy prevalence ranging from 0.2%–4.1% . Epilepsy affects physical, mental and behavioral function. Psychiatric disorders frequently affect 32% to 41% patients with epilepsy. The most common psychiatric comorbidities found among patients with epilepsy are depression, neuroses (nonpsychotic anxiety disorders) and psychoses.
Depression is the most frequent comorbid psychiatric disorder in epilepsy. Its lifetime prevalence has been estimated at between 6% and 30% in population-based studies and up to 50% among patients followed in tertiary centers.
Epilepsy, anxiety, and depression are all common disorders. It is therefore not surprising that the conditions coexist in a significant number of patients. Indeed, some authors estimate the lifetime prevalence of depression in association with epilepsy to be as high as 55%.
Studies have estimated that up to 50% of patients with epilepsy develop psychiatric disorders, the most common being depression, anxiety and psychotic disturbances.
Objective: This study was conducted to find out knowledge and attitudes towards common psychiatric disorders among epileptic patients.
Methods: A randomized case controlled study was conducted by using a face-to-face interview, 111 patients with generalized epilepsy were included combared with 111 of normal population from blood doners.
