Abstract

This work aimed to study expression of oncofetal protein, IMP3 on different thyroid lesions and to detect its role in differentiating benign and malignant thyroid lesions. We performed an immunohistochemical study using the Avidin-Biotin peroxidase technique on formalin-fixed paraffin- embedded tissue sections, and correlated the results of staining with patient clinical and pathological data such as age, sex, grade, size, lymphatic/vascular invasion, capsular invasion, nodal metastasis and TNM stage. The current retrospective study was carried upon 57 thyroid cases collected from Department of Pathology and Early Cancer Detection Unit; Benha faculty of medicine from 2013 to 2017; composed of, 7 cases of hashimoto thyroiditis, 10 cases of hyperplastic nodules, 15 cases of follicular adenoma, 13 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma, 6 cases of follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma and 6 cases of follicular thyroid carcinoma, in addition to 6 cases of normal thyroid tissue as a control group.Fifty-two (91.2%) cases were <55 years and 5 cases (8.8%) were≥55years. Fifty-one cases (89.5%) were females 6 cases (10.5%) were males. All the examined 6 cases of apparently normal thyroid tissue, used as a control group, were negative for IMP3 expression. In studied 17 cases of non-neoplastic group, 6 cases (85.7%) of Hashimoto thyroiditis, were negative for IMP3 expression, and 1 case (14.3%) was positive. In hyperplastic nodules 8 cases (80%) were negative.
