Abstract

Wadi Abu Rusheid area is a region characterized by low to medium topographic features. The area is dissected by Khour Abalea, several gullies and NNW-SSE and ENE-WSW shear zones. The area comprises, ophiolitic mélange, cataclastic rocks (mylonites), granitic rocks and post granitic basic dykes.
Ophiolitic mélange occupies the western and southern part of the study area. It is subdivided into ophiolitic fragments of various sizes and the enclosing metasedimentary matrix. Ophiolitic fragments are represented by mafic-ultramafics blocks of serpentinite, talc carbonate, deformed metagabbros, massive metagabbros and amphibolite. Metasedimentary matrix is composed of schists. These schists are either pelitic or psammitic. The matrix of schists is ortho-and para-schists, e.g. talc schist, garnetiferous schist, garnet-mica schist, graphite schist, sillimanite schist and biotite schist.
Cataclastic (mylonitic) rocks occupy the central part of the study area. These rocks are overthursted by ophiolitic mélange. They consist of four varieties, including protomylonite, mylonite, ultramylonite and silicified ultramylonite .
Younger granites are represented by biotite granites and two-mica granites. Biotite granites are more abundant occurring with moderate relief in the northern and southern parts of the study area, while the two mica granite forms.
