Abstract The aim of this essay is to review the possible role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis and treatment of different rheumatic diseases. And Meta-analysis of rheumatoid arthritis We performed a literature search for studies that examined vitamin D status in RA patients and controls and the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and RA activity Our meta- analysis included only 6 studies according to our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria - Predefined RA definition - Data on serum vitamin D values in an adult population Exclusion criteria We excluded studies if: - They contained overlapping or insufficient data. - They were reviews or case reports. - They were abstract only. Our meta- analysis revealed that there is statistically insignificant difference in serum Vit D and frequency of Vitamin D deficiency between RA cases and control .Analysis of the correlation between serum Vit D and ESR in RA cases revealed negative statistically significant correlation and no correlation between serum Vit D and CRP and disease activity in RA patients. Recommendations: We need further clinical studies on a large number of patients for longer duration to investigate the change in serum vitamin D level and its relation with disease activity by serial measurements not a single one. |
