Abstract

Folk medicines is one of the popular terms of traditional knowledge in our society. It is based on folk education system, philosophical thought and cultural origins of a society. Menstrual cycle disorders are a major gynecological problem among adult females and a major source of anxiety to them and their family. The folk medicine that people throughout the world have used to treat menstrual disorders must number in the hundreds. Those used by Western herbalists include Chaste tree, Dong-quai, Black cohosh, Raspberry, Aloe Vera and et al. (Rivera, 2013).
The presented study aims to assess the folk methods used for menstrual disorders among unmarried females.
A descriptive study is conducted in two faculties at Ain Shams University morning during teaching, 3 days/week. Which selected through simple random sampling for practical and theoretical faculties (they are faculty of commerce and faculty of engineer).
Data collected by using:
A Structured interviewing questionnaire:

A Clear explanation of the nature and the aim of the study has been given to the student to obtain their informed verbal consent which includes the rights for privacy and confidentiality.
The researcher has visited the both sitting 3 days/week from 9 am to 1 pm.
At first the researcher has introduced herself to the students and has greeted them, then she has explained the aim of the study to them.
*Approval of the students would been obtained orally before taking history and after explaining the purpose of the study.
*The researcher has taken the students in free time.
*The researcher has identified unmarried students, diagnosed as menstrual disorders and didn’t take medical treatment
*The researcher has distributed the questionnaire sheet for the students to fill it.
*The researcher has clarified any question for the students.
*The researcher has taken the questionnaire sheet after filling it.
The main results of the presented study are the following :
The results of this study clearly shows that as regards Types of menstrual disorder, it has been noticed that half of the studied sample suffers from premenstrual syndrome (50%), dysmenorrhea (30.6%), Menorrhagia (16.7%) and Oligmenorrhea (2.8%) in faculty of engineering. While the vast majority in faculty of commerce suffer from dysmenorrhea (78.3%). The presented study shows that half of the sample in faculty of engineering use fenugreek. While the rest of them use Hot water bottle to massage abdomen , Mint, Coriander seeds and Ginger. While in faculty of commerce , They use fenugreek, Mint, Hot water bottle, Cinnamon, Parsley, Coriander seeds and Fennel for dysmenorrhea.
Concerning types of folk methods used for PMS. It has showed that (47.22%) in faculty of engineering use fenugreek, (2.77%) Hot water bottle, (27.77%) Mint, (11.11%) Cinnamon, (11.11%) Aniseed .while in faculty of commerce, They use (49%) fenugreek, (31.3%) Mint, (5.88%) Hot water (7.84%) Cinnamon, (5.88%) aniseed.
Finally, It has been noticed that the most popular folk methods use in two faculties in age (21 -23) years is fenugreek and mint in age (24 – 27) years in faculty of commerce .and also there is no a statistical significant difference in the relation between the age of the group and folk methods that is used for premenstrual syndrome from two faculties.
It has been noticed that the most popular folk methods used in faculty of engineering in urban are fenugreek (52.6%) and mint in rural and also in faculty of commerce in urban and rural is used fenugreek, and there is a highly statistical significant difference in the relation between Place of residence and folk methods that used for premenstrual syndrome in faculty of engineering. While there is no a statistical significant difference in the relation between Place of residence and folk methods that used for premenstrual syndrome in faculty of commerce.
The study revealed that:
A half of the studied sample suffers from premenstrual syndrome in faculty of engineering. While the vast majority in faculty of commerce suffer from dysmenorrhea. The most common folk methods used to relieve premenstrual syndrome in two faculties is fenugreek followed by mint, hot water bottle, Cinnamon and Aniseed which are effective among almost all of the study subjects.
And also, the most common folk methods used to relieve dysmenorrhea in two faculties is fenugreek followed by hot water bottle, mint, Coriander Seeds, ginger, Cinnamon, fennel and parsley which are effective among almost all of the study subjects.
In the light of the foregoing, the following recommendations are suggested:
• Health programs should be conducted for young women about menstrual disorders and its proper interventions to alleviate it.
• Increase awareness of females about fenugreek, mint, Coriander Seeds, ginger, Cinnamon, fennel and parsley that used to relieve menstrual disorders.
• Integrate self-care management of menstrual disorders into curriculum of women’s health department
Future researches :
• Specialized studies are needed to investigate the effect of folk methods on relief of different menstrual disorders.
• Traditional Health education should be introduced in school education. Curriculum should be developed in secondary and higher secondary schools on the folk methods used for menstrual disorders.
