Abstract

This thesis is an investigation and study of the electric field distribution within the underground medium voltage cable accessories. Two methods of stress control analysis with stress control tube (SCT), stress cone or deflector (SC) were studied. A computer program with COMSOL is applied to get the theoretical analysis and simulation results. The results obtained that the stress control tube applied on the cable screen reduces the electric field at the termination area successfully. Increasing relative permittivity of SCT between 5 and 40 has a great effect in reducing the electric field and the effect of the electric field distribution is best achieved by a material with Ɛr=40.The deflector model decreases the concentrating electric field distribution at the termination area.joint of a single core cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) was studied.
Many factors such as the defect (water droplet, cavities) size and location, insulation material dielectric constant and insulation thickness, have been investigated. The cavities are assumed to have different shapes; cylindrical and spherical, and their dimensions were changed, and their number is varied from one to three either in horizontal or in vertical formation. The electric field at that region is increased.
An experimental work in presented to measure the electric field in the cable and compared this results with the theoretical results.
