Abstract

Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is a set of flexible machine tools
connected with an automated material handling system and which are
controlled by control unit have widely expanded in industry sectors all over
the world. Scheduling is a decision-making process that is used on a
regular basis in many manufacturing and services industries and it is one
of the most crucial problems that face the life cycle of FMSs.
This thesis presented the simultaneous scheduling problem of Automated
Guided vehicles (AGVs) and machines in FMSs. The study was based on
Discrete Event Simulation (DES) using ARENA®15 package software to
solve that problem using benchmark data used by previous studies which
composed of ten job sets each set composed from five to eight job and
between 13 and 21 operations to be scheduled on four different layout of
machines using two identical AGVs for job handling from load\unload
station to machines.
The developed simulation model is mainly aimed at creating the targeted
jobs and simulate the processing of them on the machines which are
predetermined on their assigned sequence and determine the priority of
selecting the waiting jobs according to the scheduling rules like the First
in First Out (FIFO),Last in Last Out (LILO),Short Processing Time (SPT)
and Longest Processing Time (LPT). Furthermore, the simulation of AGVs
and their guided paths, movements and how to determine the priority of
selecting an AGV if there are more than one idle AGVs according to the
dispatching rules such as Shortest Travel Distance(STD) and Longest
Travel Distance (LTD).The objective of this study is determining the starting and completion times
of each job to minimize the makespan and to obtain the optimal schedules
of jobs operations on machines. The results validate the robustness of the
simulation model, especially for large-scale problems. Furthermore, they
were compared against the other approaches and show consistency.
