Abstract

Gallstone formation is a common complication after bariatric surgery.
This study aimed to assess the rates of symptomatic gallstones formation and analysed the results after laparoscopic gastric bypass (GBP) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG).
Pure restrictive procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy should result in less gallstone formation because the food continues to follow the normal gastrointestinal tract.
According to our results, it was not indicated to undergo concomittent prophylactic cholecystectomy during bariatric surgery as risk factors like age, sex, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia & using UDCA prophylaxis had no significance confirming the formation of gallstones after undergoing bariatric surgery as P values are 0.47, 0.684, 0.319, 0.119 & 0.48 respectively while other parameters as weight loss more than 25% of original weight after bariatric surgery, BMI more than 40 kg/m2 and type of bariatric surgery (gastric bypass) were considered the risk factors which had significance that will help in future selection of patients whose will need close retrospective follow up as P values are 0.041, 0.002 & 0.001. But still no significance of risk factors except for wide scale and large numbers for more accurate results.
