Abstract

This prospective study was done during the period between May 2016 and May 2018 on 40 cases of choledochocystolithiasis presented by obstructive jaundice diagnosed clinically, by laboratory & radiological investigations were admitted to surgery department at Menofia university hospitals with planned ERCP with sphincterotomy and stone extraction which would be followed by stent insertion in half of the cases.
The aim of the work was to compare stent versus no stent placement after successful common bile duct stones clearance by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.
According to our study there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding ERCP procedure duration which was longer for group I and the duration of hospital admission which was also longer for group I.
While there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding; patients’ characteristics, preoperative investigations, number of CBD stones by cholangiography, post sphincterotomy bleeding, conversion of laparoscopic cholecystectomy to open and its performance in the same session with ERCP or in another session, postoperative laboratory investigations nor postoperative complications like post ERCP pancreatitis or recurrent obstructive jaundice with subsequent need for emergency ERCP .
Also stent related complications developed in group I like stent migration while no stent occlusion or stent related perforations occurred.
