Abstract

This thesis investigates the poetics of marginalized women identities through analyzing four novels by two Nigerian writers; Flora Nwapa and Chimamanda Adichie who challenge the norms of African literature being an exclusively male canon and redefine the image of women set by male writers in their fiction, analyzing from a third world feminist perspective the poetics they deploy to speak up for marginalized women and confront gender stereotypes and social traditions set by their patriarchal Igbo society to oppress women.
Focusing on the female characters in Nwapa’s novels Efuru (1966) and One is Enough (1981) and Adichie’s novels Purple Hibiscus (2003) and Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), the study analyzes the writers’ portrayal of women in their novels and their fight to reclaim their voices and achieve their identities.
Using the comparative approach, the researcher analyses these writers from the first and third generation to understand the similarities and differences between the two writers and their writings and the poetics and strategies they use to construct their novels.
