Abstract

Lipid lowering remedies have a pivotal role in inhibition of CVD. Most population relies on herbal medicine for treatment of diseases due to the highly costs for synthetic drugs, probable side effects of these drugs.
Garlic has been used medicinally for centuries. Its constituents are purported to have a wide range of health-promoting properties attributed to a high concentration of organosulfur compounds.
Coriander constituents are also proved to have a wide variety of health-enhancing potentials. It is a good source of essential oil, flavonoids, active phenolic acid and β-carotene. These substances are responsible for the hypolipidemic effect and other activities of coriander.
The current study was delineated to evaluate the antihyperlipidemic potential and the antioxidant activity of garlic and coriander in rat fed cholesterol rich diet.
For this purpose, twenty eight rats were randomly divided into
o The control negative group (8 animals) received the basal diet
o The hypercholesterolemic group (20 rats) was fed on cholesterol rich diet (2% cholesterol) daily for 45 days to induce hyperlipidemia. After the development of hypercholesterolemia (ensured by decapitation of 4 rats of each group and blood analysis), the hypercholesterolemic rats (16) were then divided according to the type of treatment into four sub-groups (four rats each) and treated orally daily for 4 weeks as following;
Control positive: continued on basal diet without any addition.
Garlic group: received garlic tablet (200mg/kg b.wt).
Coriander group: received coriander extract (300mg/kg b.wt).
