Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the antiulcer effect of Glycyrrhiza Glabra Linn (liquorice) extract and Zingiber Officinale (ginger) against piroxicam induced gastric ulcer in rat model. Forty five of male albino rats were classified randomly into five equal groups(n=9), group(1) was normal control; group(2) piroxicam (30mg /kg b.wt) as a single dose after 24 hour of fasting ; group (3) piroxicam+ rantidine (150 mg/kg b.wt ) group(4) piroxicam + liquorice extract (150 mg/kg b.wt ), group (5) piroxicam + ginger extract (700 mg/kg b.wt ), all drugs were given orally by gavage . Volume of gastric juice, gastric juice decrease percentage, ulcer score ,ulcer index , curative ratio were measured, haematological findings (erythrogram, leukogram), antioxidant enzymes [glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT)], lipid peroxidation marker (malondialdehyde(MDA) and (tumer necrosis factor – alpha (TNF-α) were assayed. The results of the present study revealed that decrease in volume of gastric juice and ulcer score, ulcer index compared with piroxicam group, concomitantly liquorice and ginger caused significant increase in GPX, SOD, CAT and decrease in MDA, TNF-α compared with piroxicam group. These obtained results were confirmed by histopathological examination. It could be concluded from results of present work that liquorice extract and ginger extract exerted a healing and antiulcerogenic effect that can be at least attributed in part to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. |
