Abstract

The respiratory tract is one of the most common sites of infection. Acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in children. LRTI is one of the most frequent reasons for mechanical ventilator support in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
Anemia is one of the most common worldwide health problems affecting developed and developing countries. Among various nutritional deficiency anemia, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the commonest and it is reported to be the most prevalent nutritional problem in the world. Anemia and iron deficiency anemia must always be taken into consideration as they have a clear impact on the patient’s quality of life. Iron deficiency exerts adverse effects on immune response and alters the metabolism and growth of pathogens. It has been reported that low hemoglobin impairs tissue oxygenation and acts as an independent risk factor for developing lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in children.
