Abstract The study aims at holding a thematic comparison between the political poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and the political poetry of Nizar Qabbani. It is divided into three chapters and a conclusion. Chapter one is an introductory chapter that deals with the need for Comparative Literature. In addition, the biographies of the two poets tackled showing up the historical backgrounds of the contemporary political events. The relation between poetry and politics and the concept of political poetry are treated at the end of this chapter. The “literature review” comes at the end of this chapter. Chapter Two is mainly focusing on the indoor politics in the poetry of Browning and Nizar Qabbani. Chapter Three is about the outdoor politics. It concentrates on the concepts of patriotism and nationalism. The conclusion sums up the points of similarities and others of differences between the two poets. Consequently, this asserts the necessity of using thematic approach of Comparative Literature studies in such cases of comparing between literary works from different eras. Apparently, there are many points of similarities between Browning and Qabbani. These points assert the notion that they were true poets and verily interpreted the pains of their societies and their nations. The hypersensitivity of both poets is the motive to interpret the pain and joy into words and with these words they depict vivid pictures valid for different ages. These similarities, between two poets with different societies and eras, assert the compatibility of the thematic approach to this comparative study. |
