Abstract The aim of this work was to study the antioxidant system in some seaweeds such as Colpomenia sinuosa and Sargassum linifolium collected from the Abu Qir area of Alexandria where these seaweeds were the most dominant in this region.Extracts from the studied seaweed were prepared the water extract, ethanol extract, acetone and methanol. The results showed that the methanol extract was the most effective in extracting the reduced glutathione, oxidative and total glutathione, followed by the acetone, then the ethanol and the distilled water. The ratio of reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione ranged from 1.3 in the acetone extract to 1.5 in the ethanol extract. For Sargassum linifolium methanol showed the highest value for total glutathione, followed by ethanol, acetone and water extract. The ratio of oxidized glutathione to reduced glutathione ranged from 1.3 for ethanol to 1.8 for acetone extract. The results showed that the proline content in Colpomenia sinuosa was less than that of Sargassum linifolium and the ethanol extract was the most effective in extracting proline. The results showed that both Colpomenia sinuosa and Sargassum linifolium contain phenols, which was high in Sargassum linifolium especially in the case of methanol extract followed by acetone, ethanol and water extracts. |
