Abstract

Sepsis is defined as a clinical syndrome resulting from the
presence of both infection and a systemic inflammatory response.
Sepsis is still the leading cause of death in critically ill patients.
Early diagnosis of sepsis is vital because rapid and appropriate
therapy is associated with improved outcomes.
SuPAR is the soluble form of urokinase plasminogen
activator receptor (uPAR), a receptor mainly expressed on various
immunologically active cells. uPAR is involved in plasminogen
activation, cell adhesion and migration, all central aspects of
inflammatory processes and it is upregulated in response to immune
activation. Soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor
serves as a stable and promising prognostic marker in critical ill
patients to assess disease severity and mortality risk. High levels of
suPAR are associated with increased risk of early mortality and
reflect disease severity.
The present study aimed to evaluate serum suPAR level and
to clarify its prognostic impact in critically ill patients. suPAR was
determined in 60 critically ill patients admitted to ICU by ELISA
technique. In addition 20 apparently healthy individuals matched in
age were included as a control group. Patients were followed for a
period of 28 days.
Patients and controls were subjected to the following:
1- History taking and careful clinical examination.
2- Routine laboratory investigations:
 Complete blood picture.
