Abstract

Background: Substance use disorder (SUD) is a significant public health concern and is one among the most common psychiatric disorders beginning in young adulthood. It is estimated that 1 in 5 children grow up in a home in which someone uses drug or alcohol. An estimated 8.3 million children younger than 18 years (12%) were residing with at least one substance- dependent or substance- using parent’s between 2002-2007. Aim of the work: To illustrate the behavioral problems of 6-18 years old children and adolescent of substance abuser fathers. Subjects and Methods: The present study is a cross sectional observational study aimed to define the behavioral problems of children and adolescents of fathers with substance use disorder. Illustrate the Association between behavioral problems in children and personality pattern in their fathers; illustrate the Association between behavioral problems in children and adolescents and severity of drug addiction in their father. Results: The results are divided in to 6 parts: Description of the sample, percentage of behavioral problems in children and adolescents of fathers with SUD, relation between behavioral problems in children and type of substance abuse by their fathers, relation of behavioral problem in children and duration of substance abuse by their fathers, relation of behavioral problems in children and duration of substance abstinence, relation between behavioral problems in children and personality pattern in father’s with substance use disorders, relation between behavioral problems in children of fathers with SUD and addiction severity index. Conclusion: As the duration of SUD increases the interparental conflicts and interparental violence increases which increases the risk of internalizing, externalizing and total behavioral problems among their children.
