Abstract

This report deals with various energy recovery devices such as the Francis turbine, Pelton wheel, turbocharger and Pressure Exchanger, used in Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plants along with case studies associated with each of these. In this study it was concluded the most efficient device applied for energy recovery is Pressure Exchanger (PX) method which has lower specific energy consumption as 2.50 kWh/m3 than other methods such as energy recovery turbine (Turbo charger, Pelton and Francis Turbine). These methods have specific energy consumption as 3.2 kWh/m3- this comparison was applied to the Jeddah Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant for a total productivity of 240,000 m³/day-, but the energy recovery turbine (ERT) was favored over it due to its lower initial and maintenance costs. Finally, you need to make an optimization carefully between methods before starting the project.
