Abstract
This report handles one of the most common water desalination technology, Reverse Osmosis. Before talking deeply about RO technology, it was a must to understand the water crisis all over the world especially in Egypt, then water chemistry of RO was discussed to sense the chemical reactions, fouling and scaling formation and how to get rid of them at the RO cycle. Most of desalination technologies are expressed briefly to understand the principle of operation of each one. Reverse Osmosis cycle was discussed in details showing pretreatment including multimedia filtration, Green Sand filtration and chemicals addition, showing also RO treatment step which includes membrane types and configurations, Finally post treatment step was discussed expressing chemical addition to introduce safe and healthy drinking water. As a practical application of RO system, Western desert desalination plant was expressed to link the scientific studies with the practical reality, technical data of each component of the plant was mentioned to sense the process of reverse osmosis. Process overview was mentioned to illustrate the flow diagram of the normal operation of RO process, also chemical addition and cleaning of the membrane sequence was spotted due to the importance of this step to ensure the life of RO system.
