Abstract

This study aimed to assess betatrophin expression in pregnant women with GDM diagnosed by OGTT and to evaluate their association with metabolic risk factors.
Subjects were classified into:
group I (Patients group):
50 pregnant women at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy with G.D.M attending to Minia University of Obstetric and Pediatric Hospital diagnosed by:
Fasting blood glucose > 92 mg/dl.
Oral glucose tolerance test:
Blood glucose 1 hour after glucose load >180 mg/dl.
Blood glucose 2h after glucose load > 153 mg/dl, with a single abnormal value.
group II (Control group):
30 apparently healthy pregnant women. All the control participants were matched with patient population in terms of age and gestational age (24-28 weeks of pregnancy).

All pregnant women included in the study were subjected to the following:
1-Complete history taking.
2- Clinical examination .
3-Laboratory Investigations:
A-Routine investigations:
Complete blood count (CBC) .
Renal function tests.
Liver function tests.
Lipid profile.
Fasting blood glucose.
1, 2 hour blood glucose after oral glucose load.
B-Special:
Betatrophin by enzyme immuno assay (EIA).
As regarding comparison between group I and group II it was found that :
There was significant increase in BMI in group I more than group II.
There was significant increase in Hb level in group II more than group I.
There was significant increase in TLC in group I more than group II.
There was significant increase in platelets count in group II more than group I.
There was significant increase in lipid profile (Cholesterol , Triglycerides , HDL and LDL) in group I more than group II.
Significant increase in random blood glucose in group I more than group II.
Significant increase in Oral glucose tolerance test ( Fasting blood glucose ,1hour after glucose load and 2 hour after glucose load ) in group I more than group II.
Increase in Betatrophin percentage in group I compared to group II.
No significant difference in age , gestational age , ALT level , AST level , albumin level , urea level or serum creatinine level.
