Abstract

Neurological complication (NC) is a major source of morbidity and mortality following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The aim of this study was to shed light on risk factors, incidence and outcome of post operative neurological complications.119 adult patients of both sexes with end stage liver disease undergoing living donor liver transplantation in Dar AlFouad and El-Manial Specialized hospitals were studied and investigated for the pre-operative period and followed up during post-operative hospital admission. The studied patients were subjected to review of their history before transplantation including the type of end stage liver disease, pre and post transplant laboratory data were documented including serum electrolytes as well as liver and renal functions. Moreover, type of immunosupression used for each patient and levels of those associated with neurotoxicity such as Tacrolimus and Cyclosporine were studiedThe results showed that BMI is not significantly related with neurological complications. History of Alcohol intake may be a risk factor for post operative neurological complications. Total dose of tacrolimus within the 1st week and its cumulative effect has a significant correlation with neurological complications, this was obvious during follow up the tacrolimus level on day 7. Post operative hyponatremia may be a significant risk factors for neurological complications.
