Abstract

Summary and conclusion
This study was performed to evaluate the role of T2 maps and ADC
maps in diagnosis of lumbar disc degeneration.
This study evaluated 30 patients: 15 males and 15 females. Their ages
ranged between 35 and 62 years (mean age of 47.50 ± 7.88) presenting with
low-back pain and referred to Radio-diagnosis and medical imaging
department at Tanta university hospital for MRI assessment during the
period between May 2017 and May 2018.
All patients were subjected to :
-proper history taking.
-Initial spine protocols followed by complementary T2 mapping and
diffusion weighted imaging.
- Pfirmann grading system using sagittal T2WI.
This study showed the following results:
1- percentage of discs classified into pfirmann grade I (11.3 %)
,Grade II (24%) ,Grade III (28.7 %), grade IV (28.7 %), grade V (7.3 %).
2- T2 values were found to decrease with the extent of disc
degeneration except in grade V it found to be increased again.
3- there is negative correlation between T2 values and semi
quantitative grading(Pfirmann Grading) of disc degeneration and T2 values
were significantly different when compairing Grade I to V .
