Abstract Laparoscopic splenectomy has proven to be a gold standard for treatment of patients with some splenic disorders although many other operations have come to be performed laparoscopically in recent years. This study includes 20 patients in whom splenectomy is indicated as a line of treatment of their splenic disorders and by investigating the feasibility of laparoscopic splenectomy in 10 patients compared to 10 patients subjected to open splenectomy as control group. All of the patients were operated under general anesthesia after preoperative investigations, preparations and appropriate criteria including drug intake and bleeding disorders. With the advancement of laparoscopic skills and technology, the minimally invasive approach was applied to many open procedures, including splenectomy. Laparoscopic splenectomy is ill advised in patients with large spleen including those with hypersplenism, in patients with major traumatic splenic injuries with hemodynamic instability and uncontrolled bleeding disorders.. Using the harmonic scalpel and legasure increase the feasibility of laparoscopic splenectomy as a line of treatment in patients with some splenic disorders. In spite of relative more operative time of laparoscopic splenectomy, yet the main advantages of laparoscopic splenectomy is less intra operative bleeding, less hospitalization and hence early return to work and employment as compared to open splenectomy. |
