Abstract This study evaluates laparoscopic hysterectomy as regard operative time, blood loss, post-operative pain, analgesic requirement, early and late operative complications; also compares short and long term clinical results of laparoscopic and open hysterectomy. Forty-two sequential patients were included and scheduled for panhysterectomy at Department of General Surgery, Menoufia University and were divided into two groups from March 2016 till April 2018. The clinical characteristics of the 42 patients were similar as regard follow up duration, age and parity. The indications for hysterectomy among the study groups were nearly similar. There was significant difference between the two groups in the operative time which decreased progressively for both groups but more in the second group. Two cases were re-admitted, one for repair of vesico-vaginal fistula for Laparoscopic hysterectomy and the other for repair of incisional hernia for open hysterectomy. The LH group showed fewer analgesic requirements, earlier ambulation, shorter hospital stay and earlier regain of daily and coital activities. On the contrary, much more direct costs. Laparoscopic hysterectomy has become a popular alternative to abdominal hysterectomy; as dissection of major vessels and cardinal ligaments by electrosurgery, stapling devices and/or extra or intracorporeal sutures are now available. |
