Abstract

Background: Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most frequent primary intraocular malignancy in pediatric age group. It represents 3% of all childhood malignancies. It also represents the most frequent primary eye malignancy in children under 15 years old, habitually occurring in infancy, even in utero, but can be observed in older children or young adults.
Purpose: To assess visual functions rehabilitation in retinoblastoma survivors after treatment and complete cure and their impact on their quality of life by means of Visual Functioning Questionnaire – 25(VFQ-25).
Patients and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, conducted in Ocular Oncology Clinic, Ophthalmology Department, Ain Shams University Hospital starting from July 2017 through February 2018.
Results: This study included thirty patients [16 males (53%)and 14 females (47%)].Their age ranged from 6-19 years. Patients were classified into two groups:
I. group 1: Unilateral patients. 15 patients: Right eye was involved in 8 patients (53%), left eye was involved in 7 patients (47%). Out of the 15 patients only 11(73.3%) underwent enucleation of the diseased eye. Thus from the 30 eyes in this group 11 eyes (37%) were enucleated, 19 eyes (63%) were preserved.
II. group 2: Bilateral patients. 15 patients: out of the 15 patients, 12 (80%) underwent enucleation, thus from the 30 eyes in this group 12 (40%) were enucleated and 18 (60%) were preserved.
Conclusion: Rb survivors’ QOL is affected by the duration of receiving treatment since the first diagnosis till complete regression of Rb. The longer the duration the worse their QOL is expected to be.
