Abstract

This dissertation investigates the modern critical theory of intertextuality as a major theory among modern literary theories in the poetry of the Iraqi poet Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab (1926-1964) and the Irish poet William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) in terms of mythology and symbolism as forms of intertextuality. The theory of Intertextuality has become a major question of literary and theoretical studies. The intertextual nature of literary texts has become an axiom for literary and cultural studies in English and Arabic literature. Chapter one ”The Theory of Intertextuality” examines tracing the origin, developing and theorists of the theory of intertextuality in English and Arabic modern literature. Julia Kristeva, influenced by the theories of Ferdinand De Saussure and M.M. Bakhtin, has coined the term intertextuality suggesting that any text is a mosaic of quotations and is the absorption and transformation of another text. Chapter two ”Intertextuality in the Poetry of Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab” focuses on discussing and analyzing the selected poetic works of Al-Sayyab and how he has employed the mythic and symbolic intertextuality in his poetic works as a strategy to achieve his national and political purposes throughout his poetry. Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab is one of the outstanding poets of modern Arabic poetry who brought modernism of English literature to be applied to modern Arabic literature. Chapter three ”Intertextuality in the Poetry of William Butler Yeats” focuses on discussing and analyzing the selected poetic works of Yeats and how he has employed the mythic and symbolic intertextuality in his poetic works as a strategy to achieve his national and political purposes throughout his poetry. William Butler Yeats is a key figure in the English modernist poetic tradition. Yeats was devoted to the cause of Irish nationalism and played a significant part in the Celtic revival movement, promoting the literary heritage of Ireland. Symbols, allusions and quotations which are an integral part of his poetry are drawn from mythology, the occult, and his view of history as defined in his cryptic prose volume A Vision and revealed in his poetic works. Chapter four ”Al-Sayyab and Yeats” examines how Al-Sayyab and Yeats dealt with the issues of their era; through their poetic works. They discussed national and political issues with different perspectives and styles to uncover the predicament of modern man and civilization. Images of Intertextuality in Al-Sayyab and Yeats’s poetry are demonstrated in terms of mythology and symbolism. Mythological and symbolic intertextuality are discussed in the selected poems. Al-Sayyab and Yeats wrote about the chaos, the confusion and a need for order with different perspectives and styles to uncover the dilemma of modern man and civilization. The conclusion gives answers to the questions dealt with throughout the study. It discusses the most important results of the study and it restates and unifies the main ideas and concepts discussed throughout the study.
