Abstract

Hepatitis C virus causes liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Viral specific antibody and RNA are diagnostic. As in literatures, the role of viral RNA and microRNA in the machinery of liver disorders was not fully understood and need further investigations. The role of viral RNA and microRNA-complementary DNA (miRNA-c-DNA) were assessed in126 Egyptian patients with HCV. Their correlations with micronutrients levels and iron status were investigated. The levels of viral specific RNA cannot differentiate the pathological stages of liver but that of total miRNA–cDNA differentiates HCC patients from control. Presence of virus-but not viral load- can correlated with the iron status and micronutrients. Free radicals were involved herein rendering iron chelating therapy and the use of antioxidants as beneficial for reduction of the disease outcomes.
